Service Earthquake Information Disaster Prevention System
Know before it shakes!
The Emergency Earthquake Warning is a new earthquake information system initiated by the Japan Meteorological Agency in February 2004, aimed at reducing damage from earthquakes. Traditionally, earthquake information was announced about 3 to 4 minutes after an earthquake occurred. In contrast, the Emergency Earthquake Warning analyzes the waveform of the initial tremors (P-waves) detected at seismic observation points close to the epicenter immediately after an earthquake occurs, and issues a warning in approximately 5 to 7 seconds. By receiving this information before the seismic waves arrive, it has become possible to estimate the seismic intensity and calculate the time available before strong shaking occurs.
